Abstract

This study discusses the declaration of The Power of Reading and Writing in Surah Al-‘Alaq verses 1–5 from the perspective of Tafsir Qur’an al-Karim by Mahmud Yunus. Surah Al-‘Alaq, as the first revelation, emphasizes the fundamental importance of literacy as the foundation of knowledge development and human civilization. This research aims to examine the Qur’anic concept of reading and writing and its relevance to Islamic education and the socio-educational context of Indonesian society. The study employs a qualitative library research method, using the Qur’an, Hadith, and Tafsir Qur’an al-Karim as primary sources, supported by relevant books and academic journals as secondary data. Data analysis is conducted using a thematic biographical approach. The findings reveal that Mahmud Yunus interprets the commands of reading (iqra’) and writing (allama bil qalam) as the core pillars of an Islamic literacy tradition that fosters intellectual, rational, and moral development. His interpretation highlights that the progress of the Muslim community is closely linked to literacy awareness grounded in Islamic values. Therefore, Surah Al-‘Alaq verses 1–5 represent a strong declaration of the power of reading and writing as universal and timeless foundations of Islamic education
